You need a Patent Application on file at the Intellectual Property Office, before you divulge information about your idea or invention to third parties.
The first filing, establishes a Priority Date for your Patent Application, and this helps to ensure that you establish at least the basic concept(s) behind your idea or invention, before others do.
Development of your invention is essential, in order to ensure that you do not give away your identified need, by presenting to third parties, an undeveloped solution to that need (i.e. your idea or invention) which is therefore vulnerable to improvement by them.
Subsequent filings, made during the 12 months measured from your Priority Date, should thus contain descriptions of your developed idea or invention.
